Koto-ku / Museum
Open 10am-5pm. Closed weekends.
Free admission
Average visit time: 20-40 minutes

Run by the Lixil corporation, a global conglomerate that manufactures kitchen and bathroom fixtures and building materials, this in-house museum focuses on the history of the company and the building industry in general. The biggest attraction though seems to be the large, multi-room library of books, magazines and journals relating to architecture and the building industry.

You can call ahead for an appointment to speed up the entry procedure; otherwise you might have to wait at the reception desk downstairs for several minutes for someone to accompany you to the museum/library. English-language guided tours are available on request, or you can just wander around on your own.

The exhibits in the museum area focus on the evolution of kitchen and bathroom appliances, window sashes and gates, and tiles and other building materials. Museum-style timeline displays show off some highlights from the corporate histories of Inax, Tostem, American Standard, Toyo Exterior and the other founding companies before they merged to become Lixil.

One of the interactive displays of the museum illustrates the moisture-absorbent properties of Ecocarat ceramic tiles, which are designed to absorb odors and help regulate humidity. You can also see examples of the tiles that were used in the recent renovation of Tokyo Station, and models of kitchen sinks from the early 20th century.

Models of conceptual projects from Lixil-sponsored student competitions are scattered around, and small room of the museum is devoted to household safety tips. Free lockers are available for visitors' bags.
